Hope from the Hills

Sharper Focus!

John Killinger once heard a man in London say: “You know, sometimes I miss those nights we spent in the Underground during the war, with the firebombs falling on the city.  Things mattered then in a way they haven’t seemed to matter since.  You knew God was around.  You knew what life was about.”

For example: A friend who has Hepatitis B – the deadly kind – said last week, “All of us know we are terminal.  But when doctors begin speculating about how and when, things sure come into sharper focus.”

How right he is:  Last week, while I was in prep for a minor surgery, technicians discovered that I have Adenocarcinoma lung cancer – at Stage Two.  So instead of a minor surgery, I have Lung Surgery set for Monday morning.

And sure enough: things have come into sharper focus.  Crisis situations are always good times for thinking about God.  Not just when things are going smoothly. When life hits ‘a really big bump’– everything flips into a new dimension.  Suddenly God is back in the center of awareness.

And you know what? Carolyn and I can’t think of any good reason we should be exempt from something like this.

We are blessed. We have a great team of doctors who tell us that surgery and chemo combine for a 70% cure rate.  Good odds.  And we are enormously grateful for wonderful family and the massive prayer support of friends around the globe. So we expect successful treatment. And sure we pray for total cure.

But – above all – no matter what the future holds, we are overwhelmingly grateful for the presence of The One who promised, “I will never leave you or forsake you.“

Hey, we just looked out the window, and guess what: The sky has not fallen and God’s sun is still shining.

In Tennessee and Kentucky, we are praying.  If God were an earthly parent, He would be saying, “Enough already! I heard you the first time!“ But since He is better than that, He is saying, “Lynn is going to love what I’ve got planned for him!“

We will not grow weary in praying for you and Carolyn as you are caught up in this medical system.  We are asking God for your speedy release from the doctors and restored health.  David and Dee are in town and planning to stop by to see you tomorrow.  We want a miracle for you like the one David received.  The First Baptist Church in Houston (where Beth Moore teaches) is praying for you every 30 minutes!  My good friend Veva Savage is making that happen.  And Dee has her group of mighty prayer warriors busy on your behalf too.  So you are REALLY getting the BEST medicine!!!  We love you so much!  Carolyn and Ken (aka Nana and Pop)
