Safe and Secure
In our kind of world, where can one be totally safe? In a school? Ask Columbine or Virginia Tech! Surely one would feel safe in the heart of a domestic military training center, right? Ask Ft. Hood!
And where can one find security? In a huge stock portfolio? Ask your neighbor about his or her retirement account! Ask ten percent of the Americans about their employment situation! Ask me about good health! A year ago in top health. Now I am recovering from lung cancer surgery and chemotherapy!
Installing bigger locks and walking on the safe side of the street would not help. Our relentless pursuit of Safety and Security is an exercise in futility.
There is no place where “moth and rust do not consume; where thieves do not break through and steal.”
Carolyn and I have tried to teach our kids that Safety and Security are not the highest values. Those who think so live very cautious, restricted—and boring—lives. In fact, to pursue Safety and Security makes us feel increasingly insecure and unsafe.
The more we attempt to protect our own safety, the more frightened we become. The more we attempt to protect our own security, the more insecure we feel. So what could be Zoe—real abundant living—becomes a prison of fear. Even when we have a high degree of Security and Safety, the fear of losing them trumps the joy of having them.
These Bible words are not mere piety. “Whoever would save his own life will lose it. And whoever loses his life, for my sake, will find it.” To surrender the pursuit of happiness, inevitably results in more of it. To give away our lives to something larger than self-protection inevitably results in more real joy. To stop clinging to Safety and Security eventually takes us into real life—out of the clutches of fear.
