What Makes Small Groups Systems Effective? (Part 2 of 5)
By Jack S. Hicks
A clear purpose is as vital for a small groups system as identity to a human psyche.
Without it, death, or at least the absence of vitality, is certain. Whether or not a public mission statement hangs on a wall is immaterial. That key players, including group facilitators, know and own the purpose(s) for the small groups system is crucial. Some potential purposes include: enhancing community; enabling spiritual formation; facilitating Bible study; offering worship to God; and implementing ministry projects.
The list goes on.
What the purpose is matters less than knowing what the purpose is…and tenaciously keeping the system aligned with it. The awareness of purpose provides direction, a criterion for evaluation, and substance for accountability.
Small groups systems that work well always have evident purposes.
